According to William Allen, the new bridge over the Matfield River at Elmwood was built in 1880. It has been said that before this time crossing by horse drawn vehicles was very difficult in the spring season. The elms recall the beauty that gave the village its name. The house, the former Currier's Shop, was at 698 Bedford St.
